Liebe kritische Köpfe im Gesundheitswesen!
Vom 06.-17.November findet die UN-Weltklimakonferenz (COP 23) in Bonn unter der Präsidentschaft der Republik Fidschi statt. Bei der COP 21 in Paris wurden 2015 als Aktualisierung des Kyoto-Protokolls neue Klimaziele gesetzt, mit denen alle 196 Mitgliedsstaaten sich verpflichtet haben, ihre klimaschädlichen Emissionen zu mindern. Ironisch ist nun, dass der technische
Gastgeber Deutschland die Vereinbarungen dieses Pariser Abkommens als Land mit der größten Braunkohleförderung und -nutzung der Welt nicht einhalt, während die Präsidentschaft von den Fidschi-Inseln getragen wird, welche massiv unter den Klimafolgen leiden ohne selbst dafur verantwortlich zu sein.
Der Klimawandel ist die größte Gefahr, der Kampf dagegen aber auch eine der größten Chancen für die globale Gesundheit im 21. Jahrhundert (vgl. The Lancet 2009, 2015) – unter diesem Motto rufen wir speziell alle Akteur*innen des Gesundheitswesens auf, sich gemeinsam für den Schutz unserer Umwelt und Gesundheit stark zu machen. Im Rahmen des People’s Climate Summit (PCS) vom 03.-07.11.17 veröffentlichen wir ein Positionspapier, bilden auf der
Großdemo am 04.11.17 einen Gesundheitsblock und werden am 06.11. einen Workshop zum Thema “Klimawandel & Gesundheit” anbieten.
Um auf der Demo als medizinisches Personal sichtbar zu sein, wollen wir uns in einer öffentlichkeitswirksamen Aktion verkleiden: als Kohle-Arbeiter*innen und symbolische Figuren der allgemeinen Bevolkerung, sowie als Mediziner*innen, die die anderen mit Stethoskop oa. untersuchen und behandeln.

Dear critical minds in healthcare!
The UN-Climate Conference (COP23) is taking place in Bonn under the
presidency of the Republic of Fiji on November 6 to 17.
2015, during the COP21 in Paris, new climate goals have been set as an
update of the Kyoto Protocol, thus all 196 member states commited to
reduce their climate-damaging emissions. Ironically, the host country
Germany, having the biggest brown coal mining and usage, doesn’t comply
with the agreement, whereas the Fiji Islands, holding the presidency, do
suffer drastically from the climate impact, whithout being responsible
for it.
Climate change is the biggest hazard, but the fight against it may also
be one of the biggest chances for global health in the 21st century (see
The Lancet 2009, 2015) -with this slogan we especially want to address
players in the healthcare system to come together and campaign for our
environment and health.
Climate change means more droughts and heat waves, as well as floodings
and storms, which lead to undernutrition etc worldwide. Examples are
crop failures, as well as diarrhea and infectious diseases because of
dirty drinking water.
Various effects can already be observed in Europe as could be seen
during the 2003 heatwave with 70.000 deaths.
Besides massive fine dust pollution from coal mining leads to increased
cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, more strokes, a higher risk
during pregnancy and a shorter life expectancy.
During the People’s Climate Summit (PCS) from November 3 to 7 we are
going to publish a position paper, form a health group in the big
demonstration on November 4, 2017 and offer a workshop about „Climate
change and health“. For being recognized as medical staff during the
demonstration and to create an effective publicity, we want get
creative. We’ll dress up as coal workers, average people and medical
staff, inspecting and treating the others.
We refuse a policy that keeps supporting „fossil“ companies and ignores
the emergence of diseases and death.
Every person’s health is an unimpeachable right.
Let’s get together and take part in the big demonstration „Klima
schützen -Kohle stoppen“ (Save the climate – stop coal)!
